Class 5 News

In Waldorf education, Class 5 is regarded as a ‘Golden Age’. It is thought that the child in Class 5 has successfully crossed the Rubicon and settled into a sense of balance, flexibility and harmony. It is a time when the children experience a special equilibrium with their dawning inner life, and a sense of lightness with their outward movement.

In Term 3, Class 5 began the main unit of study for the year: Ancient Greece. Our study of Greek culture began with mythology: tales of gods, monsters, heroes, battles and quite a bit of sailing. As we followed the perilous adventures of Theseus, Peracles, Heracles and Odysseus, we were able to observe and discuss the archetypal human characteristics which led to their eventual success, such as resilience, courage, ingenuity and perseverance. Whilst much has changed in the world over the last 3,000 years, there are still strong parallels between these epic tales and our modern lives. Like these heroes, each of us undertake a journey beset with challenges and unpredictable obstacles. Daily life! In order to succeed, we too need to become heroic in our deeds and noble in our intentions.
Consider the plight of Odysseus, lashed to the mast of his ship as it approached the Sirens. Hearing their song, he was desperate to be released from his bonds. He begged his crew to release him. Yet moments before he had instructed them to tie him to the mast, telling them to pull the knots tighter if he should ask to be released. This small episode captures a fundamental aspect of our humanity, wherein we remain vulnerable to the temptation of seductive voices that lure us from our path, even when we are aware and take precautions against such voices.  Everyone knows this feeling, and understands just how difficult it is to resist temptation and stay on the path. May we all have the fortitude of heroes!
Our quest for Olympic glory is only days away, and we hope that our training will serve us well. We seek to represent the Golden Hill community with honour and virtue.
I have been incredibly proud of the work completed by the children this term. It continues to improve in skill and effort, and the individual styles of each child are beginning to shine through. Please enjoy this snapshot of our work from this term.
