Class 5 News
In Term 4, Class 5 concludes its odyssey into the world of Ancient Greece. Whereas previously we delved into the mythological stories of gods, monsters and heroes, we now for the first time approach a main lesson through a historical lens. At first the distinction may seem obvious: mythology is a world of fantastic stories and quests, whereas history is concerned with the truth - things that actually happened. However, modest excavations into this dichotomy will reveal a much more nuanced reality: history arises out of story, and of course the narrative of history is tightly contested.
The Golden Age of Greece produced a host of outstanding achievements, many of which have endured, influencing the development of humanity over the past two millennia. In a comparatively short period of time, significant contributions to the fields of politics, philosophy, architecture, sculpture, poetry, drama (and more!) were developed, and bequeathed to future humanity.
We have been dipping our toes into these various fields of endeavour, building an appreciation for the high level of skill required to create a temple, an amphora, a poem, or a body politic according to the style of the Ancient Greek. As with any main lesson, we will merely scratch the surface, but along the way we plant seeds for the future.
