Makuru Festival and Winter Spiral postponed
Dear Parents and Carers,
After reviewing the BoM forecast for Friday, we have made the decision to postpone Friday's Makuru Festival and Winter Spiral to Tuesday, June 21st - the actual date of the solstice!
Monday will allow us to repair any damage to festival structures and make final preparations for Tuesday.
Thank you to those who committed to tasks to assist for the festival - making soups, supplying greenery, laying out candles on the walk. We rely on, and are ever so grateful for, the assistance of parents. If this change of date means you are unable to meet that commitment, we certainly understand – just let us know and we can find a replacement (and if you are ahead of the game and have made soup already, then pop it in the freezer for Tuesday!).
A reminder that this festival is one of inward reflection. We ask that mobile phones are not used as torches or for taking photographs during the spiral or lantern walk. We ask that once lanterns are lit on the verandah, classes wait quietly until their time comes to walk the spiral. Staff will stand around the spiral and sing and Class 5 will play the lyre in the forest. We ask that the spiral and lantern walk are completed in silence. Once you emerge from the forest, please make your way quietly to the bonfire area alongside the oval for the Class 6 lighting of the bonfire. With the lighting of the fire, we will then join as a community to sing around the bonfire, before departing for the remainder of the evening to our homes, carrying that mood of reverence.
Please enusre you arrive promptly at 5.30pm so there is sufficient time for Winter stories and to share soup and bread.
The candle lighting will take place at 6.15pm in classes and we ask that as you pass out the classroom door to the verandah that you assemble in silence from then until the singing at the bonfire, enjoying the reflective mood, singing and lyre playing and the sounds of the forest and fairies on the lantern walk.
Apart from the date, everything else will remain the same and we look forward to marking the actual solstice with you on Tuesday!
Warmest regards,
Jacqui and Robyn
